Departure day
Arrive in Buenos Aires at anytime throughout the day. Airport transfer to the corresponding hotel is included. There are no activities planned for this day until our first welcome meeting in the late afternoon, most likely in the hotel lobby.
Buenos Aires is located on the shore of Rio de la Plata (Silver River). With a population of 13 million, the city was first established as Ciudad de Nuestra Señora Santa María del Buen Ayre (literally "City of Our Lady Saint Mary of the Fair Winds") on 3 February 1536, during a Spanish expedition led by Pedro de Mendoza.
During the 17th and 18th centuries, Buenos Aires depended on trade. By the 1920s, the city was the favorite destination for immigrants from Europe, particularly those from Spain and Italy.
Considered to be a cosmopolitan city, it has plenty of European architecture and an air of a European city. Buenos Aires has some very distinctive neighborhoods like the vivid and colorful La Boca, which is situated on the old port. Walk along its main attraction, el Caminito, a street that inspired a famous tango song and where local artists show their brightly colored paintings. The area is home to the most popular football team in the country: Boca Juniors. Also, you can explore the relaxed and bohemian La Recoleta district and visit the cemetery where many of Argentina's elite are buried, including the well known Evita Perón. In addition, be sure not to miss the antique fair and tango shows in San Telmo.
Tango music was born in Buenos Aires, notably in the brothels of Junín and Lavalle streets and in the arrabales (poor suburbs). Its sensual dance moves were not seen as respectable until they were adopted by Parisian high society in the 1920s, and later by the rest of the world. Tango consists of a variety of styles that developed at different times, in different regions of Argentina and Uruguay, as well as in other locations around the world.
Enjoy a drink in one of the many sidewalk cafes and restaurants, and you will begin to understand the contemplative Argentine way of life. While in Buenos Aires you will have the best opportunity to try a delicious parrilla, with juicy and tender local beef.
Meals Included: Breakfast
Travel by ferry across the Rio de la Plata and get to the picturesque and distinctive town of Colonia. Founded in 1680 by the Portuguese as "Colônia do Sacramento", it used to be a port for smuggling goods and a fortress. Walk from the harbor to our hotel.
The historic quarter (Barrio Histórico) of Colonia del Sacramento is designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This section of the town, which has some cobblestone streets built by the Portuguese in the 17th century, is within walking distance of the hotel. A great option is to rent bikes, scooters or golf carts to explore this town.

The adventure continues with a 3-hour bus ride from Colonia to the capital city of Uruguay, Montevideo. The majority of the Uruguayan population is concentrated here (1.3 million out of a total of 3 million inhabitants). This city has the highest quality of life in Latin America.
Founded in 1726 by the Spanish, Montevideo is very lively and modern with many architecturally interesting buildings and some good beaches outside the city. Visit a local market to try some great food.

Ride on a night bus heading north to the stunning Iguassu Falls. Located on the border between Argentina and Brazil, these breathtaking waterfalls consist of 275 falls along 2.7 kilometers (1.67 miles) of the Iguassu River, up to a height of 82 meters (269 ft).
Iguassu Falls are higher than Niagara Falls and wider than Victoria Falls, with the added advantage that at one point a person can stand and be surrounded by 260 degrees of waterfalls. These falls were declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986.
Our trip will take us on a two-day adventure to visit Iguassu Falls. On the morning of day one we will visit the Brazilian side of the falls, and then the afternoon is free for optional activities like a visit to the Itaipu Dam or to the Bird Park.
The second day starts with a trip to the Argentinean side of the falls, to approach the Devil's Throat. There is plenty of time to wander around the park and its many pleasant trails.

We include a boat trip around the island, with a barbeque at Lopes Mendes beach and a snorkeling adventure in these clear waters.

A short drive will take us to the most famous and exciting city in Latin America: Rio de Janeiro. Its main landmarks and attractions are the statue of Christ the Redeemer on top of Corcovado Mountain, Sugarloaf Mountain, the Sambadrome and its carnival, football matches, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, and the favelas (slums).
Cariocas (inhabitants of Rio) say "God created the world in six days, the seventh he devoted to Rio de Janeiro". The city is also referred to as Cidade Maravilhosa (Marvelous City), and we have to agree; the landscape of beautiful mountains, green forest, clean sandy beaches and blue ocean, combined with friendly cariocas, great weather and delicious caipirinhas make this city extraordinary.
Visit one of the new Seven Wonders of the World: the statue of Christ the Redeemer. We will catch a local bus to the train station located at Rua Cosme Velho, and then ride the train up through the urban forest of Tijuca. Be amazed by the great panorama of the city.
Christ the Redeemer, standing at a height of 38 meters, had its cornerstone established in 1922 and opened to the public on October 12, 1931. It couldn't be placed in a better location; from its position on top of the 710 meters high Corcovado Mountain, this statue represents the carioca's faith, and just celebrated 77 years of existence in 2008.
Guanabara Bay was reached by a Portuguese expedition led by Amerigo Vespucci on January 1, 1502, hence Rio de Janeiro (literally, January River). On March 1, 1565, the city was officially founded. Until the early 18th century it was threatened and invaded several times, mainly by French pirates and buccaneers.
After 1720, when the Portuguese found gold and diamonds in Minas Gerais province, Rio de Janeiro became a key port for exporting these goods. Prince Pedro I proclaimed Brazilian independence in 1822, and decided to keep Rio de Janeiro as the capital of his new empire. It remained as the capital city of Republican Brazil after the fall of the Monarchic regime in 1889, and continued to be so until 1960 when it was replaced by Brasilia.
The city has earned the reputation of being a beach-party town although this has been somewhat tarnished in recent years by favela violence, as a result of drug trafficking.

Breakfast (17), lunch (1)
When travelling with Footprint Expeditions, not all of you meals will be included. We want you to be able to explore the flavour of the local cuisine in each place that we visit, and our experienced guides and tour leaders can suggest some great food options in every destination. Nevertheless, most of our trips include some meals in order to facilitate your experience. This is usually a continental breakfast, but also some lunches and dinners during included activities where it would be impossible for you to find your own food. The food provided on these occasions is always fresh and very well prepared by our chefs and cooks.
Hotel (17), night bus (1)
Important note: Accommodation can be quite basic or multi-share at times.
Private and local buses, boat, ferry and the power of your own feet!
We believe that a big part of the adventure experience is the journey from one destination to another. This is why we use a multitude of forms of transport to travel; always putting safety first by using reliable companies.
Driver in Iguassu Falls (tour leader will guide), Corcovado Tour in Rio de Janeiro.
Transfer from the airport upon arrival in Buenos Aires is included if you provide us with the flight information at least five days in advance.
Always bring the items of clothing that you might need for the trip. It is also a good idea to bring a set of some nice clothes for going out in the evening or for some fine dinning. Pack as light as possible; remember that you will have to carry your back pack or duffel bag. We also recommend that you bring good quality outdoor clothes, especially hiking boots, a wind breaker and a warm jacket in case you are doing outdoor sports.
Laundry service is provided at most of the hostels and hotels where we will be staying, although they may charge a bit more than the street launderettes. There are private laundry facilities available for reasonable prices in almost all of the towns visited on our trips. We suggest that you ask your tour leader for the best places to do it.
It is very important to bear in mind your own spending habits when you make your trip budget based on eating, drinking, partying, shopping, tipping and any other expenses that may arise. Every traveller has different spending requirements and it is important to remember that it is always better to take more rather than less money as you do not want to spoil your trip because of feeling short of funds.
Allow USD 370 for meals not included.
In case of any emergency caused by external factors out of the control and responsibility of Footprint Expeditions (e.g. social issues, natural disasters, or strikes), trips can be re-routed, and it is important for you to have access to at least an additional USD 200 or equivalent as an emergency fund. While any of the previously listed emergencies rarely occur, it is better to be safe than sorry!
Most of our trips involve a Local Payment. The overall tour price is divided into two separate payments. The first payment is the one that you paid directly to your travel agent, to your Footprint Expeditions sales representative or through our website. The Local Payment is the final amount which must be paid to your tour leader or Footprint Expeditions representative on Day 1 of the trip, at your joining hotel. It has to be paid in cash in the requested currency; normally US Dollars or Euros. Doing this allows us to supply our tour leaders with cash to help pay for the tour until they get the total funds needed for the trip, avoiding problems caused by limited banking facilities and the slow transfer of funds. At the same time, this helps us to save on operational and administrative costs and we can keep our trip prices competitive by passing on those savings to you.
In Latin America, it is customary to tip service providers such as guides, drivers, cooks, porters and horsemen, depending on the quality and quantity of the service. It is of considerable significance to the people who will take care of you during your trip. Ask your tour leader for specific recommendations. Expect to tip in restaurants at approximately 10%, or more, depending on the quality of the service and food. Please remember that tipping is an expression of satisfaction for the services you received and is not compulsory.
If you felt that your Footprint Expeditions tour leader did an outstanding job, tipping is appreciated. As a guideline, we recommend $25 per person, per week of travel. However, this amount is a personal preference, entirely at the customer’s discretion.
Visa credit cards are largely accepted in most of the countries in South America, and there are plenty of ATM facilities for cash advances on credit and debit cards. Be aware that in most places you will be charged a fee of up to 10% when paying with credit cards. Always ask how much you will be charged. Other widely accepted cards are MasterCard, American Express, and Diners.
We suggest that you bring a combination of USD cash, credit and debit cards and some Travellers Checks, even if you may get a less-favourable exchange rate for the latter. The commission varies between 2% to 10%, but the Travellers Checks will give you the safety in case your credit or debit cards won’t work.
Exchange rates can fluctuate every day, so please visit the following site for the most up-to-date exchange rates: www.xe.com
